What an excellent chicken keeping blog. I read from your latest entry that you're at somewhat of a crossroads with the decision to keep it going or not... I say keep it!

We've been Keeping Chickens for a little over two years now. We now have 7 hens in our back garden flock and have never looked back on the decision to keep up this marvelous hobby.

Of course there's the highs and lows... Eggs, learning how to and then being able to nurse a sick chicken back to health and the obvious problems with Mr Fox; but what other hobby could provide such thrills and spills and be so rewarding? LOL!

I often find that I've spent too much time chicken watching and leave late for work... Fortunatly being my own boss means I only have myself to tell off, so it doesn't cause too many problems.

Any how, keep up the good work and I've added you to my chicken keeping rss news reads.

I am on Vancouver Island and am interested in selling hens at point-of-lay to backyard owners. My partner travels to Vancouver weekly, so delivery wouldn't be a problem. Best to buy in pairs, up to the four maximum. Contact me if you're interested.

As a rural chicken owner I am very happy that Vancouverites will soon have the opportunity to enjoy the company of backyard hens. Nothing tastes quite like eating your own eggs! I live in the Cariboo and have family in Vancouver and will be raising chicks for them when this bylaw finally is finished. I am wondering how to get hold of others that may be looking for family raised chickens.

Justin,

What a great site!

Could the chicken friendly vet list be added to the resources page? Also, the housing section is very helpful, but a basic coop plan or two there would be great - perhaps once the by-law is in place, we could come up with plans for the ideal Vancouver backyard coop. Lastly, could we have information posted on where to obtain chickens locally?

Also, I think Donna's idea of Lee Valley (or some other local company - Tisol maybe) supplying/distributing coops is fabulous. Is there anyone who could approach local companies to encourage this?

A big thank you for all those who worked so hard at something which shouldn't have been hard at all. Our child looks forward to having his chickens and we are reading furiously and consulting all our rural/chicken owning friends. It behooves us all to do this right, to inform ourselves and each other. Thanks again FarmFolk/CityFolk.

I am so excited about this back to the future decision. I look forward to some good information around chicken coop construction, coyote and racoon proofing and all types of "how to raise chickens information". I want to be sure of the "how to" before I begin.

Perhaps Lee Valley Tools would be a good supplier/partner for city coops.

Maybe I don't have to move to the Gulf Is. after all!
