We’ve been advised that Vancouver City Council is looking at placing the proposed bylaw change allowing the keeping of backyard hens on the agenda of its February 4, 2010 meeting. Given that approval is not considered a slam dunk, supporters are being urged to attend the meeting and speak in support of the proposed bylaw amendment. If approved, it is expected that we’d receive the green light to bring hens into the City subject, of course, to the restrictions set out in the proposed bylaw.

Looks like they won’t be taking up the chicken bylawon the 4th after all. There is no mention of it on their agenda and Tina at City Hall had no info on upcoming action on it.
I looked on the city’s website and it looks to be on the 2:00 agenda, as the earlier meeting is on budget issues. The in-house area (4 sq. ft.) and the one-laying box-per-hen policies are the ones that I think most need to be scrapped, but the proximity measures are a bit confining too.
The question is, will the proposed bylaw be made available to the public prior to Feb 4? I think that would make a big difference in how people on both sides of the issue respond at the council meeting. It would at least be nice to know ahead of time whether they made any changes based on feedback from the proposed guidelines that were published last year.
I am certainly looking foward to the day when the worst kept secret in my neighbourhood is no longer a “secret”.
