We’ve heard through the grapevine that Vancouver City Hall has been receiving some very vocal opposition to an amended animal control bylaw allowing backyard chickens. As is often the case, it would seem that a small, but loud, minority is voicing their opposition while those in favour stay quiet… thus leading the powers that be only hearing the opposition.
Sign our petition and let Vancouver City Council know that you support a bylaw amendment that would allow the responsible raising of urban chickens in our city's backyards.
We the undersigned believe that raising backyard chickens is one of the many steps that can be taken to create a more sustainable food supply in Vancouver. We wholeheartedly support an amended animal control bylaw allowing Vancouver residents to raise chickens in their backyards.

Backyard chickens is a fantastic opportunity for a more sustainable future and with the right controls has zero draw backs. Hope this proposal is allowed to go ahead =-)

Many of the recent objections in the Vancouver Sun to allowing chickens, set up specious oppositions between allowing the keeping of chickens and undertaking other green, eco-density policies in Vancouver. The idea that there is any such conflict (if we allow chickens, we can't pursue eco-density??) is utterly illogical. Many sustainable initiatives are needed at once; few, if any, work in opposition to each other. Food security and low-carbon (local) food production are increasingly pressing issues, and comprise one significant element in the creation of sustainable cities.
susan Stewart, V6K 2S3
Food security will be the number one issue that many people in Vancouver will experience in our near future. Urban agriculture, including chickens, will be key in addressing local needs. We have already built the footprint for our chicken coop in my housing co-op. Please ensure that backyard chickens become a reality in metro Vancouver.

I live in Campbell River, and keep 10 hens. Now our ridiculous city hall is considering backwards thinking and placing a ban on backyard hens. Go figure. Yeah Vancouver, boo Campbell River.

I believe that supporting the ethical raising of backyard chickens in Vancouver is an essential duty of this city's citizens if we are serious about the envisioning and enacting of a sustainable, healthier, and kinder future here in this city.

Great way to cut down food waste while providing compost material for the enhancement of vegetable productivity.

Backyard chickens can be accommodated successfully in an urban environment; time for Vancouver to join the ranks of cities already normalizing this activity for food security, teaching our young people about animal husbandry and more.

Chickens are amazing creatures.
I'd love to have one as a pet, maybe people will learn to apperciate them a lil more.
Plus if you have to eat eggs, it's better to hav them organic.
Peace\'//

This would be great for communities and families to allow everyone to really see where food comes from. I know a few adults in Vancouver who have not actually seen a chicken except in pictures! City Council please allow this by-law amendment to go through.

Please allow backyard chickens - no food miles involved and it teaches kids (if you have them) where food really comes from: i.e. not from stores! Go Vancouver Go!

We, a family of four, are new home owners in Vancouver. We are trying to lead an environmentally responsible lifestyle, both global, and local. We feel very strongly that having the ability to raise/ grow our own food supply locally is not only responsible, but necessary. Vancouver residents will only become comfortable with urban food supply if they are informed of the benefits. Vancouver city council has done a great job of promoting composting, with the right promotion the public could easily side with urban agriculture. Raising chickens locally is cost effective, and primarily, health beneficial.

Maybe have a certain # of individual permits and the more for Co-Ops (coop, pun included). This way we'll guarantee an educated & supported process of allowing chickens in the city.. and it will last! Vancouver is very transient.. let Co-Ops manage the chickens & facilities, and you'll have better maintenance, long-term care.
xxxxxxxx, V6G 2M6
Allowing chickens in back yards could extend our food supply, which currently sits around 3 days. If an earthquake, such as the one that just hit Haiti, were to hit Vancouver and close down our infrastructure, most of the city would starve. With 0 million+ put into Olympic security, it seems silly not to put some effort into food security.
Adri Bigsby, V5R 1L5

There is no reason a small flock of well kept chickens should be treated like a specialty case. If we allow people to have large exotic parrots, how is this any different?

I'd like to have to opportunity to grow food right from the source, and chickens are a great learning tool to do that. This way I can be sure they are cared for properly, and I can do my part to lessen the impact on the environment in terms of packaging and transportation involved in supermarket products.

It's a chicken for cryin' out loud, not a pitbull! Why would anyone oppose having a natural food source within reach of their own backyard. I've had chickens since I was a kid I dare anyone to make me change my ways of retreiving breakfast straight from the source!

I think bringing food sources closer to home is a great idea & wouldn't be bothered at all by my neighbors having chicken coops in their backyards. It certainly wouldn't be any noisier than the children screaming at the daycare across the street or the screeching of the crows that wake me up every morning!

I've heard arguments made against backyard chickens by animal rights groups based on possible abuse. I think this is a spurious argument. I find it difficult to imagine a chicken suffering more in a Vancouver backyard compared to a factory farm in the Fraser Valley.

only makes sense - get on with it. There are dozens of US cities with chickens, look at their by-laws. It does not need to take a year for such a simple task.

1) Chickens are friendly, quite pets.
2) Having chickens in the back yards is daily education for kids.
3) Chickens don't need to be walked on the street.
4) Back yard chicken can help organic gardens.
5) back yard fresh chicken eggs are much more reliable, healthy.
6)...................... much much more good reasons for having back yard chickens.
